DIY + Modern Dining Table

THUMBNAIL- DIY DINING TABLE.png

We did it Y'all!  We needed a dining table so bad- left ours back in NM, so we decided to build one that we would love, instead of buying one we just liked.  I knew for sure that I wanted to use hairpin legs.  I love the modern, industrial feel- they are just classic!  I found several tutorials online using plywood as the top, so we decided to go for it.  You may be thinking- Girl, that's a pretty simple table- and you would be right!  But, this is our first big piece, so we're just a lil' excited!

We set out to Home Depot to pick up the wood and screws.  There are several different types of plywood, but we went with Purebond because it's better for the environment and your family.  Traditional plywood contains a lot of glues and adhesives that can off-gas formaldehyde into your home.  Purebond uses soy-based adhesives.  Plus, it's made in North America.

I wanted a really large table, so I had my pieces cut to 4x6.  Four feet is pretty wide for a dining table, but I wanted a big table we could do homework at, eat big meals on, and spread out all our projects.  So for us, it works!  The hardware store should cut your plywood- no problem, or you can easily trim it yourself with a circular saw.

First, we set the tabletop on our saw-horses (top-down)  and poured wood glue all around.  We used Gorilla Glue and it worked really well!  Next, we placed the second sheet of plywood on top and lined up the sides.  Ours was cut just right, so it lined up almost perfectly.  Then, we placed clamps all around the edges.  I then marked the spot where the legs would go, the instructions said to go in 2", but I wanted a larger overhang, so I measured 4" from each side, and marked my holes.  Next, we started screwing the pieces together.  Lot's and lot's of screws- I think we used around 80!

Next, we added the legs and turned her over.  Time to sand the edges. We started with 120 grit and then moved to 220 to finish them off.  This plywood is a beautiful birch, so we didn't need to sand the top.  Finally, we added two coats of satin poly, and let it dry for 48 hours. And BOOM- a huge, modern dining table my family will enjoy for years to come!
